Originally settled in 1903 as a fur trading post by Revillion Freres of Paris (HBC’s competition) , the town of Moosonee is located on the Moose River 12 miles south of James Bay. The town site is in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, the largest wetland area on earth. The population is approximately 3000 with about 85% being Cree. The main language is English with Cree as a second language. There is also a small French population. The Church of the Apostles has a Tea Room in the summer which serves both local people and visitors. They also have a Thrift shop open bi-monthly.
